The Nurse and Patient Safety

As much as 80 percent of a nurse’s shift is taken up with paperwork and other administrative duties—leaving far too little time for direct patient care. But if hospitals have any hope of significantly improving patient safety, it’s the nurses who will lead the charge. To give nurses more time at the bedside, hospitals need to develop supportive environments that eliminate wasteful work, reduce staff turnover, increase patient satisfaction and improve clinical outcomes. This gatefold shows how to build a culture of patient-centered care and examines the four themes of Transforming Care at the Bedside, an Institute of Healthcare Improvement initiative. Case studies show how the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Kansas Hospital are putting the TCAB principles into practice.
