The 2009 American Hospital Association Environmental Scan provides insight and information about market forces that have a high probability of affecting the health care field. It is designed to help executives better understand the health care landscape and the critical trends and issues their organizations are likely to face in the foreseeable future.

The 2009 Environmental Scan is compiled from about 30 nationally recognized sources with recommendations from select AHA governance committees. Categories include consumers & demographics, information technology & e-health, insurance & coverage, political issues, provider organizations & physicians and quality & patient safety.

Three experts comment on this year’s Environmental Scan and on the strategic planning process. They include Gene J. O’Dell, AHA vice president of strategic planning; Mike Parrington, vice president of strategic initiatives at Catholic Health Initiatives; and William Petasnick, president and CEO of Froedtert & Community Health.
