Contributing to H&HN Daily

H&HN Daily (www.hhnmag.com) publishes exclusively online, every weekday at noon CT, to more than 88,000 health care executives, director-level managers, and health policy makers. We accept articles from volunteer contributors to complement our regular offering of features, columns, blogs, and audiovisual clips. Potential articles should focus on a critical aspect of health care leadership and, if possible, should address the future of health care.

All articles must appeal to an executive-level audience in hospitals and health systems. We particularly seek articles that:

  • Provide a new or cutting-edge angle on leadership in the changing health care environment
  • Promote community health improvement and cross-sector collaboration
  • Stimulate teamwork and integrated approaches to health care delivery
  • Inspire new ways of thinking about health care services and related social issues
  • Offer strategies and insights from industries outside of health care
  • Engage our readers in creative or unexpected ways.

The desired length of articles in H&HN Daily is 800 to 1,200 words. Articles should not exceed 1,200 words except by prior arrangement with the Editor.

Published articles are normally copyrighted by Health Forum, unless otherwise agreed between the Editor and the contributor(s) in advance of the article’s acceptance.

Inquiries. We strongly urge every potential contributor to propose his or her idea for an article to our editor before beginning any work on preparing an article draft. To inquire about the appropriateness of an article idea, please send a working title, a 50-100 word abstract, and a short biographical sketch to the Editor, Richard Hill, at rhill@healthforum.com.  If the contributor’s idea sounds like it may be a good fit for H&HN Daily, our editor will offer the contributor a firm deadline for the completion of a first-draft manuscript.

The Editor plans our daily lineups 6-7 months in advance. Every contributor will normally be given at least 4 weeks to complete his or her article draft, and he or she should anticipate an editorial cycle of 10-16 additional weeks before the article is published in one of our daily issues.

The Editor will give the contributor a tentative publication date as soon as the article is scheduled for publication. If the date needs to be accelerated or delayed for editorial or production reasons, the Editor will inform the contributor of the revised publication date.

Manuscript preparationPlease prepare an electronic manuscript according to the recommendations of The Associated Press Stylebook.  The first page of the manuscript should include the working title of the article, as well as the author’s full name, degrees, institutional affiliation, address, telephone number, and e-mail address.  Multiple contributors should designate a corresponding author.

Paragraphs should be kept short and single spaced, with a line of space between each paragraph.  Please state your ideas simply and try to avoid wordy or overly complex sentences.  An informal tone is always appreciated by our busy readers.

Subheads are encouraged. It is not unusual for an 800-1,200 word article to have 2-3 subheads in addition to the main head (i.e., the title). The best subheads are short (never more than a phrase, and never a complete sentence).

If a table, figure or illustration is absolutely necessary to convey a point, please send only 1 or at most 2 such items per article. All tables, figures or illustrations must be legible and simple, and they must be placed at the end of the electronic document.  Make sure that you mention your table, figure or illustration in the text body, and that you provide an appropriate title, label, source and legend (if applicable) for each one.

As a non-academic publication, H&HN Daily does not publish endnotes, footnotes, or reference lists. Complete references, if required, should be incorporated as parenthetical matter within the text body. Web-site references should never link to a complete article, paper, figure, table, or any other complete work that may be under copyright from another source—unless you have secured and supplied the Editor with written permission from the copyright holder.

Please note wellEach manuscript must be submitted with a cover note attesting to its originality and verifying that the manuscript has not been published elsewhere, even on the author’s personal or corporate Web site, nor is the manuscript being considered elsewhere for publication. H&HN Daily holds the expectation that it will become the sole source and copyright holder of the article once it is accepted for publication.

Manuscripts must not promote commercial products or services, nor may they contain e-mail or Web addresses, phone numbers, or any other contact information for the contributing author(s). Readers wishing to contact contributors will either write to us or visit a search engine to find a contributor’s Web page. We appreciate your cooperation to maintain our neutrality and the trust of our readers.

Please prepare your manuscript in Microsoft Word and e-mail it in a noncompressed file to the Editor at rhill@healthforum.com. If a different software package is to be used for composing the article or submitting a table, figure, or illustration, the Editor should be consulted in advance of submission to make sure the file will be readable.

All manuscripts are copyedited, per Associated Press and house style, and are returned to contributors for final review a few weeks before they are published. The copy editor may also request assistance from each contributor(s) in resolving queries at that time.
