Expert Panel Discussion on The Road to CPOE

Question 12
What, if anything, would you do differently if you could start the CPOE implementation process over again?

Lee Carmen

There are many things we would likely do differently if we could start the process over again. I would try to find a peer institution running the same systems in a manner consistent with our plans and arrange to have certain key staff "live" at that site for a period of time to better understand the tools, the support implications, and the lessons learned. I would structure our training program differently, attempting to deliver training to clinical teams rather than by discipline. I would also better document how critical configuration decisions were made to minimize the time needed to revisit key issues post go-live.

We learned a great deal from our experience with The Indiana Heart Hospital. Among other things, it's important to reduce the number of mouse clicks it takes to complete an order. Physicians count mouse clicks and equate them to productivity. I do this now as well.
