Contributing to H&HN Weekly

H&HN Weekly (www.hhnmag.com) publishes online, every Tuesday at noon CT, to approximately 34,000 health care executives, director-level managers, and policy makers.  We accept articles from outside contributors to complement our regular offering of features, columns and departments.  Potential articles must focus on some aspect of health care leadership and, if possible, should address the future of health care.

All articles must appeal to an executive-level audience in hospitals and health systems. We particularly seek articles that:

  • Provide a new or cutting-edge angle on leadership in the changing health care environment
  • Promote community health improvement and cross-sector collaboration
  • Stimulate teamwork and integrated approaches to health care delivery
  • Inspire new ways of thinking about health care services and related social issues
  • Offer strategies and insights from industries outside of health care
  • Engage our readers in creative or unexpected ways.

The desired length of articles in H&HN Weekly is 800 – 1,200 words.  Articles should not exceed 1,200 words except by prior arrangement with the Editor.

Inquiries.  To inquire about the appropriateness of an article idea, please send a working title, 50-100 word concept statement, and biographical sketch to the Editor, Richard Hill, at rhill@healthforum.com

Manuscript preparation.  Please prepare an electronic manuscript according to the recommendations of The Associated Press Stylebook.  The first page of the manuscript should include the working title of the article, as well as the author’s full name, degrees, institutional affiliation, address, telephone number, and e-mail address.  Multiple contributors should designate a corresponding author.

Paragraphs should be kept short and single spaced, with a line of space between each paragraph.  Please state your ideas simply and try to avoid wordy or overly complex sentences.  An informal tone is always appreciated by our busy readers.

Subheads are encouraged.  It is not unusual for an 800-1,200 word article to have 2-3 subheads in addition to the main head (i.e., the title).  The best subheads are short (never more than a phrase, and never a complete sentence).

Tables, figures and illustrations must be simple.  Please place them at the end of the electronic document.  Make sure that you mention each table, figure and illustration in the text body, and provide appropriate titles, labels, sources and legends (if applicable) for each one.

Complete references, if required, should be incorporated as parenthetical matter within the text body.  As a nonacademic publication, H&HN Weekly does not publish endnotes, footnotes, or reference lists.

Each manuscript must be submitted with a cover note attesting to its originality and verifying that the manuscript has not been published elsewhere, nor is it being considered elsewhere for publication.

Manuscripts must not promote commercial products or services, nor may they contain e-mail or Web addresses, phone numbers, or any other contact information.  Readers wishing to contact authors will either write to us or visit a search engine to find an author’s Web page.  We appreciate your cooperation to maintain the trust of our readers.

Please prepare your manuscript in Microsoft Word and e-mail it in a noncompressed file to the Editor at rhill@healthforum.com.  If a different software package is to be used, the Editor should be consulted in advance of submission to make sure the file will be readable.

All manuscripts are copyedited, per house style, and are returned to authors for final review a few weeks before they are published.  The copy editor may also request your assistance in resolving queries at that time.

Questions?  Please e-mail the Editor at rhill@healthforum.com.
