From the introduction of vaccines to fight diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus and tuberculosis in the 1920s to the health care profession’s heroic response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina in the 2000s, the last 80 years have seen tremendous advances and surprising changes in the delivery of medical care in the United States. To celebrate its 80th anniversary this year, Hospitals & Health Networks—named the Journal of the American Hospital Association when it was launched in 1927—published “Eight Decades of Health Care,” a series of timelines highlighting health care milestones from the 1920s to the present. Popular response to the timelines prompted us to collect them here for readers to enjoy.
