As the recession grinds on, hospitals and health networks across the country face some difficult decisions. Staff reductions and the termination of unprofitable services are just two options on the table. All such weighty considerations must reflect the mission, vision and values of the organization. Values are not abstract and theoretical—they must be acted upon. Hospital leaders draw on them to achieve organizational goals, first by communicating to employees a desired outcome and then by developing a set of behavioral expectations to achieve that goal.
