RE: The 2009 Health Forum-AHA Leadership Summit July 23-25 in San Francisco
I can’t wait for the Leadership Summit! We have an unbelievable lineup of dynamic keynoters who will help us in the “Pursuit of Excellence.” This year, we will explore the role leadership plays in improving patient care and hospital performance through innovation. It is a time of dramatic change in the economy, in politics and in policy. The need is even greater for our health care leaders to innovate for superior performance, and we will learn some valuable lessons from our stellar keynoters:
Robert Reich is a University of California, Berkeley, professor of public policy and a former U.S. secretary of labor. His candid, cogent and compelling take on the political and economic climate will help set the stage for our view of the overall environment facing health care. Secretary Reich held a leadership seat during a time of high change in the early 1990s and will bring that experience to bear on where we are headed and what leaders’ role should be in pursuing excellence.
Tom Peters is a business iconoclast, author and pioneer in the pursuit of excellence in business. Tom is dynamic and irreverent, and will challenge us all to think differently and creatively to solve big problems. He is always thought-provoking, entertaining and on point. He will help leaders navigate toward high performance, or else!
Doris Kearns Goodwin, historian and best-selling author, is always a favorite at the Summit. Drawing on lessons from history, she brings wit, wisdom and deep insight to the role of leadership in a time of change. Some have argued that Team of Rivals, her examination of the members of Abraham Lincoln’s governing circle, is the handbook for the Obama administration. She’ll offer her unique perspective on analyzing the leadership challenges the country faces.
Dr. Francis Collins is a distinguished scientist and former director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health. He is uniquely qualified to help us understand the role that emerging science will play in the transformation of medicine and health care over the next decade, and how leaders can prepare for change now.
Larry Keeley is co-founder and president of the innovation and strategy consulting firm, Doblin Inc. He is the go-to guy for innovation in health care delivery and will show us how to translate creative ideas into practical innovations that health care leaders can pursue to create high performance.
We will also have a phenomenal keynote panel, moderated by Dr. Maulik Joshi, senior vice president of research at the AHA and president and CEO of the Health Research & Educational Trust. Panelists include: Robert Wachter, M.D., associate chair of the Department of Medicine at University of California, San Francisco, chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine andchief of the medical service at UCSF Medical Center; Glenn Steele, M.D., CEO of Geisinger; Samuel Nussbaum, M.D., executive vice president and CMO at Wellpoint; and Sally Wellborn, senior vice president, Wells Fargo.
It is a fantastic lineup. We will also have six educational tracks exploring a wide range of innovation and leadership topics. Plus it’s in San Francisco. You have got to be there. See you in July.
