Appointments

  • Angela F. Gardner, M.D., an emergency physician at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas, and assistant professor of emergency medicine in the department of surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern, assumed the presidency of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Sandra M. Schneider, M.D., was elected president-elect.

  • Stephen F. Ronstrom, Hospital Sisters Health System divisional president and CEO with responsibilities for Western Wisconsin, was appointed to the Wisconsin Hospital Association Board of Directors. He will begin serving a three-year board term in January, 2010.

  • The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine named Donald M. Yealy, M.D., chair of the department of emergency medicine. He had been vice chair of the department since 1995.

  • Broadlane, a cost-management company for health care providers, Dallas, appointed Greg Ericson to chief information officer. He had been vice president of global information services for Smith & Nephew, PLC, a  medical device, biotechnology and pharmaceutical corporation.

Awards

  • Five organizations and individuals received the 2009 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Awards at the National Quality Forum's annual policy meeting Oct. 14-15 in National Harbor, Md. NQF and the Joint Commission present the awards annually. The 2009 recipients, by category, are: Gary Kaplan, M.D., Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, individual achievement; Tejal Gandhi, M.D., Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, research; Michigan Health & Hospital Association Keystone Center for Patient Safety & Quality in Lansing,  innovation in patient safety and quality at the national level; Mercy Hospital Anderson in Cincinnati, innovation in patient safety and quality at the local level; and Noreen Zafar, Pakistani physician, international.

  • Ruth Colby, chief strategy officer and senior vice president of business development at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, Ill., received the 2009 Award for Individual Professional Excellence from the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development of the American Hospital Association. SHSMD said Colby successfully challenged her organization to "push the boundaries," developing strategic alliances with academic medical centers, physicians and new niche-market entrants such as MinuteClinic. She and her team spearheaded the hospital's IMatter program—a unique approach that rewards women for completing preventive health screenings by giving them discounts at local retailers.
