Looking to reveal some of the magic displayed by children who struggle with serious illnesses or other medical challenges, the Children’s Hospital Association holds a national competition every couple of years featuring photographs of pediatric patients. The photos often demonstrate how in some ways children are better equipped to react as patients than adults may be. “They just really strive to get back to their level of normalcy,” and this event helps to spread the word about that, says Amy Knight, chief operating officer for the association. “It’s not often that we get a glimpse inside a children’s hospital. It’s somewhat of a mysterious place,” Knight says. The 50 winners will be displayed in three locations in the Washington, D.C., area and are available for other exhibitions, she says.
