A new report released this week by the American Hospital Association finds that the U.S. health care sector has added an average of 24,000 jobs per month over the last year. The report, titled “Beyond Health Care: The Economic Contribution of Hospitals,” also found that hospitals support roughly $2.2 trillion in direct or indirect economic activity each year and employ more than 5.4 million Americans.
Among the other findings:
- Hospitals spend $342 billion annually on goods and services with other businesses.
- Hospitals support one out of nine U.S. jobs.
- Every dollar spent by a hospital supports roughly $2.30 of additional business activity.
