A lifelong resident of southwest Michigan, Loren B. Hamel, M.D., treated patients for 23 years before taking on executive duties at Lakeland Health about a decade ago. He has been president and CEO of the health system since 2009.
Family affair
He’s not alone in his quest for management excellence. Twin brother Lowell is Lakeland’s vice president of medical affairs, chief medical officer and co-chief of quality. They worked side by side in family practice for decades before that. Another brother, Gary, was named the world’s most influential business thinker by the Wall Street Journal and is the co-creator of the now ubiquitous concept of “core competencies.”

Hamel was born about 100 feet from his current office location.
