Seemingly every hospital and health system is looking to pursue “integration,” making sure that a patient’s care is carefully coordinated from the family physician to the behavioral health specialist. One Florida hospital, however, is going beyond the talk, and actually seeking recognition for it.

The Joint Commission on Monday awarded Parrish Medical Center with its first ever “Integrated Care Certification. The hospital accreditation organization began offering this designation in July of last year, as a way to recognize hospitals who are tying together information sharing, transitions of care, communication during patient hand offs, and other key activities as a patient moves from one setting to the next, according to a Joint Commission press release. Integrating care across the entire spectrum of services visited by a patient can help to improve the costs and quality of care, the commission notes.

“This certification recognizes Parrish Medical Center’s dedication to improving patient outcomes with better coordinated care,” Mark Pelletier, R.N., chief operating officer, accreditation and certification operations, for the JC, said in the release. “It is also a benefit to the surrounding community Parrish serves, and it reflects its commitment to ensuring high-quality care transcends the walls of its hospitals.”

Around since 1958, Parrish is a 210-bed, nonprofit medical center that’s located in Titusville, Central Florida. It just recently became the 29th member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network of providers across the country, and is the third to do so in the Sunshine State. The public hospital just established “Parrish Healthcare,” a regional integrated care network in Florida, according to its website. That network includes Parrish Medical Center, the Parrish Medical Group, which is certified as a patient-centered medical home, and the Florida Health Network, a regional network of providers, payers and others working to improve quality and safety while lowering the cost of care.
