Special: Social Determinants of Health Series

  • "Access to care" often means providing patients with affordable care. But for many, "access" also literally means transportation to their providers' facilities.

  • The housing status of patients has a profound effect on their health. Homelessness or unstably housed individuals are likely to be hospitalized more frequently.
  • The awareness of the role that food insecurity plays in health is growing as the hospital field addresses health care issues from a population health perspective.
